What Are Phosphonates?

Phosphonates are organic compounds with one or more phosphonic acid groups attached directly to carbon atoms. Phosphonates are extremely effective scale- and corrosion inhibitors at low doses, even in industrial water treatment. Unlike many other phosphate-based inhibitors, phosphonates are stable at high temperatures, in hard water, and in alkaline environments, where many standard inhibitors break down.

These chemicals prevent calcium and magnesium salts from forming hard deposits inside pipes, boilers, heat exchangers, and cooling systems through a process known as threshold inhibition.
