Carboxylic sulfonate terpolymer is a liquid polymer scale inhibitor built from three monomers acrylic acid, maleic acid, and a sulfonic acid group. Water treatment companies, RO plant operators, and boiler engineers use it to stop calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, and iron oxide scale from building up inside cooling towers, boilers, and membrane systems, even when the incoming water is hard or the system runs hot.
We manufacture it at our Vadodara facility and supply it across India to water treatment companies, EPC contractors, and industries that run cooling towers, boilers, or RO plants day in and day out.
The name tells you exactly what’s in it. “Terpolymer” means three monomers, not one or two. Each does a different job. Acrylic acid handles the calcium chelation. Maleic acid adds dispersancy — it keeps particles suspended instead of letting them settle and cake. The sulfonic acid group is what separates this product from a plain polyacrylic acid: it holds up better at higher temperatures and tolerates iron in the water far better than a simple homopolymer does.
The three monomers acrylic acid, maleic acid, and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) are polymerized together into one molecule. The ratio of these monomers is what a manufacturer tunes to get the balance of calcium tolerance, iron tolerance, and thermal stability right for a given water chemistry. This isn’t a single, fixed compound the way table salt is; it’s a formulated polymer, and formulations vary between suppliers.
A homopolymer, like polyacrylic acid, is built from one monomer. A copolymer our Carboxylic Sulfonated Co Polymer, for instance combines two. A terpolymer goes a step further and combines three, which is why it generally handles tougher water: higher hardness, higher iron content, and higher operating temperatures than a copolymer or homopolymer can manage on its own.
If you’re looking for the two-monomer version instead, see our Carboxylic Sulfonated Co Polymer page it’s a related but distinct product, and the right choice depends on your water hardness and iron levels.
Because this is a formulated blend rather than a single registered chemical compound, it doesn’t carry one universal CAS number the way a pure substance does ask our technical team for the CAS numbers of the individual monomers if your SDS documentation needs them.

Ask us for the current Technical Data Sheet and Safety Data Sheet before you finalize an order we’ll send both along with the certificate of analysis for the batch you’re buying.
The polymer works mainly through threshold inhibition and crystal modification. At very low doses, it interferes with the early stage of crystal growth, so scale-forming salts like calcium carbonate can’t organize into hard deposits. What crystals do form get distorted into an irregular shape instead of a neat lattice, which keeps them dispersed in the water instead of settling on pipe walls and heat exchanger surfaces.
The sulfonic acid group is what gives it an edge over plain polyacrylic acid when iron is present in the water a common problem in Indian cooling water and borewell-fed systems. It also holds its dispersing ability at higher temperatures, which matters in boiler and high-cycle cooling tower applications where a simple homopolymer starts to lose effectiveness.
It’s generally compatible with phosphonates (like HEDP or ATMP), zinc-based corrosion inhibitors, and most biocide programs, which is why it shows up in blended antiscalant formulations rather than being dosed alone in most commercial cooling tower programs.
Cooling tower water treatment. This is the most common use. It controls calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate scale as cooling water cycles up and concentrates dissolved minerals.
Boiler water treatment. Used in pretreatment and internal treatment programs to keep feedwater hardness from depositing on tubes and heat transfer surfaces.
RO and desalination antiscalant use. Dosed ahead of membrane systems to prevent scale from forming on the membrane surface as water is concentrated during the reverse osmosis process.
Industrial process and cleaning water. Used wherever hard water circulates through equipment and scale buildup would reduce efficiency or damage components.
Oilfield and process industries. Applied in produced-water and injection-water systems where scale control protects pipelines and downhole equipment.
Dosage depends on your water hardness, cycles of concentration, and system temperature, so treat any number here as a starting point, not a fixed rule send us your water analysis and our technical team will recommend an exact dosage for your system. As a general range, cooling water and boiler antiscalant programs commonly run in the low single-digit to low double-digit mg/L range, with higher hardness or higher-cycle systems needing more.
Store it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight, in the original sealed HDPE drum. Shelf life is typically around 12 months when stored this way check the batch COA for the exact figure.
Property | Homopolymer(e.g. Polyacrylic Acid) | Copolymer(e.g. Carboxylic Sulfonated Co Polymer) | Terpolymer(Carboxylic Sulfonate Terpolymer) |
Monomers | 1 | 2 | 3 |
Calcium tolerance | Moderate | Good | Better |
Iron tolerance | Low | Moderate | Higher |
Thermal stability | Moderate | Good | Better |
Typical use case | Simple, low-hardness systems | Moderate hardness/iron systems | High hardness, high iron, or high-temp systems |
Relative cost | Lower | Moderate | Higher |
If your water is straightforward low hardness, minimal iron, moderate temperature a homopolymer or copolymer may do the job at a lower cost. Where the water is harder, carries more iron, or the system runs hot, the terpolymer earns its price difference.

Our CARBOXYLIC SULFONATE TERPOLYMER is manufactured and shipped directly from our state-of-the-art facilities in India, ensuring quality and consistency.
Its extraordinary purity, reliable viscosity, and outstanding solubility provide enhanced efficiency in various applications, reducing the chances of operational downtime and improving process outcomes.
It’s used as a scale and corrosion inhibitor in cooling towers, boilers, RO plants, and other industrial water systems where calcium, phosphate, or iron scale would otherwise build up on equipment surfaces.
It works through threshold inhibition and crystal modification small doses interfere with crystal formation early on, so scale-forming minerals stay dispersed in the water instead of hardening on surfaces.
No. The terpolymer is built from three monomers and generally handles higher hardness, higher iron, and higher temperature than the two-monomer copolymer. Which one you need depends on your water chemistry.
A copolymer combines two monomers; a terpolymer combines three. The extra monomer in a terpolymer typically improves iron tolerance and thermal stability, at a somewhat higher cost.
It should be handled with standard industrial chemical precautions gloves and eye protection, and avoid prolonged skin contact. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet for full handling and storage guidance before use.
Typically around 12 months from the date of manufacture when stored sealed in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Check the certificate of analysis for the specific batch you receive.
